Depth

model: cooldeer123

I really like this but idk what the hell is going on with the chest?! I did it 3 times and I'm still not satisfied... I also think that this time there's more depth and I'm closer to making the 3D effect.

p.s.: The flower crown is LE and not made by me.

I think its just maybe a bit too dark (especially in contrast from the face), but I really like the concept! On top of that, you are really getting the direction of lighting down!

    1. I think it's the contrast between the face and rest of the body that makes it seem too dark but when I tried to shade the face in the same opacity it looked so awful so I shaded with 3% whilst the body is in 7% black.

      Thank you!

yup :) Also don't be afraid to push advice (I remember people saying 7% is a good opacity), but what I've found is that different percentages in opacity look good for different skin tones. I personally tend to shade lighter with tanner skin tones and shade darker with paler skin tones. In all honesty I think you should shade what you feel is right, and if this is what feels right for you, then that's fabulous! ;)

    3. Really? I think the exact opposite but I'll figure out which one flatters my graphics in the long run (i guess). Thank you for your positivity :*

  2. Earlier there was no shadows, but now black layers are too bright. You need to practice and i wish you good luck!

    1. 'Black layers are too bright'? They're actually dark enough. Thank you :)

    2. She's saying they stand out too much...

    3. Oh okay. Thanks for telling me Kasey cause I thought she meant something else.

  3. This looks really strange to me.

  4. The shading is far too dark. The shaded sections are also too large but I love your concept. :)

    1. I'm happy that you at least like the concept. I don't think it's too dark and other designers leave as much space as I did but you seem to like their work? (from what I've seen on your comments towards them)

    2. Their work looks nothing like this. You seem to be incredibly defensive against anyone who doesn't favor this graphic. As everyone has said, the shading is far too dark. Even I can see that and I don't do graphics. You should honestly stop being so negative and realize that people are telling you this because they are trying to help you better your graphics.

    3. Occasionally designers leave that much space but not all of them. Your graphic however stood out - by saying this I don't want you to feel like I'm hating on your work because you have so much potential. You just need to be more accepting and come to a realization that everything can improve! You shouldn't be comparing my comments towards others work to comments towards your graphics either because your work will never be the same as theirs - simply because there's different graphic styles.

& Exactly, what Aislin said! I was just trying to help. It's not like I would lie and say it's too dark... o_o I'm just speaking as an ex - stardoll graphic designer :)

    4. @aislin: I didn't intend to sound mean or be so defensive and most times I thank people for telling me their opinion because I know myself that it can help me improve. But I worked hard on this and everyone basically thinks it's shit and it really got to me so I got carried away and acted very defensive. My last 3 posts on here got just negative comments and it sure doesn't feel nice to know that what you've spent days on looks ugly to everyone but you. I also don't think I was mean to make Ciara wanna curse me or anything like that. Just a bit defensive and I admit it.

@Ciara: Sorry if I sounded mean, it was surely not what I wanted to be towards you. Thank you for your advice.

  6. I think it's a nice image to have chosen to make a graphic of, but there is too much shading in too dark an opacity and in too many places. I agree with Lindsey that different opacities look good in different skin tones, for me it's not a 'one size fits all' scenario, I take each skin shade as it comes and see what looks best at the time.
Unfortunately at first glance it kinda looks like she is caked in mud =/

    1. Okay, thank you for telling me.

Hmmm... I think that the chest area is the one that messes the graphic most. Hahah that was kinda funny lol

  7. With what do you make graphics? Photoshop and a Tablet? Do you draw it? Maybe a hair tutorial? Sorry if I'm annoying. Just love graphic world-

    1. I use Photoshop and all my graphics are drawn with just a computer mouse. Sorry, I can't really make a hair tutorial and my hair technique is not that great either. If you want to learn how to make hairstyles too, I suggest looking into graphics of hair you really like and try to figure out how the designer drew it. It really helps.

  8. I think what you're doing wrong is that you have way too much darkness, but no transition from dark to light. You need a bridge to bring those two colors together. Use a middle opacity of around 5 to 3 percent to replace those outer two layers(the ones that are closer to the skin color-if you know what I mean....)

Big improvement, though! I can see where the posterization tool came in handy:)

haha yes, the posterization tool really helps!

  9. The graphic looks kinda strange, but I really like it :)

  10. you're definitely on the right track! at first glance though all i see is shading, you need to highlight stronger in order for your highlight to match the strength of the shading. also, you have shaded too far into the graphic, you only need to shade around the edges and in a little more. i can see massive improvement with this graphic, keep it up!

  11. I think you all realize that she knows it looks strange. Lmao people comment on me attitude then you guys are jerks on TGV. Give some constructive criticism (for the most part people do).
If you don't do graphics or they're mediocre i don't think you guys should exactly comment. I understand where Helen is coming from. Of course she's going to defend her creation would you not?I don't think she's purposely defensive over them but sometimes a lot of the criticism is unnecessary and annoying.

    Anyways,
I really think this would had worked if you graduated the layers of shading to darker depths in certain areas such as the under the arms, the center of the breasts, and the left shoulder blade etc. I think the graphic is a bit odd itself because of the depth of shading isn't brought into shading the face. The last thing i could say to help you a bit more is find out where your light source is coming from to further understand shading.

    1. ^ God bless ^

Hmm...yes you're right about that. I was about to shade the face with the same opacity, which in this case was 7%, but when I did it looked so odd so I shaded it wish opacity on 3%. It does indeed create a lot of contrast that makes it look weirder. This is what I'm trying to tackle right now. I think that the more graphics I do, the more I improve. If you remember any of my old graphics and compare them to this you'd see a slight (like 30%) improvement on where I place the light source.

Thank you for taking the time to defend me and give me a useful and constructive commentary on the graphic. I'll try my best to use it well :) :*

  12. I think it's really good! I can understand why people would criticize but tbh they're just wasting their breath repeating things that have already been said twice! Don't let it get you down, you've worked hard on it and you've produced a fabulous graphic.

    1. Also, the fact you do all your graphics using a computer mouse is awesome! I can't believe you can produce such amazing graphics using a mouse? I use a mouse myself and I could never get up to your standard!

    2. Thank you so much! I don't think it's that difficult with a mouse. It seems more complicated with a tablet to me from what I imagine it to be like from youtube videos etc.

Just practise a lot and you'll sure get above my level sometime!

    3. I've been considering getting a tablet but then there's also the fact they're pretty expensive.

Aha I'll make sure I do!
