I am a beginner at graphics, and I understand what technique you are using but not HOW you can make the highlights shaped so right so the look exactly like that! Isn't it hard to make those z-shaped things? I have recently started a Twiggy-inspired graphic (it's not done yet), and I tried to use this technique for hair but it looked horrible! I'm not exactly sure, but all I can tell you is to play around with the angle of which the shading will occur. Practice is definitely the best option though!
Yeah, I don't like using the black and white thing either. I only use it in when I absolutely need to. Otherwise, it's only for shadows and Clothes.
